About Dressed Up Cat Handbags:
My "art wear" handbags are like no others: each one is a one-of-a-kind, wearable artwork created from vintage and/or "up-cycled" components. Each piece is titled and has its own (detachable) brass name tag, with the Dressed Up Cat logo on one side and that bag's name on the other. I work with pristine
vintage and older--typically leather--bags; although occasionally I find a bag made of another high quality material that begs to be a Dressed Up Cat. Beautifully-made,
older bags
speak a language of workmanship that is all
but forgotten in today's "ten-minute-product-life" culture. They have
so much remaining "life". I use a huge array of recycled items as embellishments: antique house wares, discarded feather
boas, vintage costume jewelry, and broken belt buckles, among other things. The themes, shapes, colors and textures
of my bags and the other components come together in delightful--and often unexpected ways. While getting a midnight snack. While walking my dogs. While listening to music. I never know when inspiration will hit! Ok, that's all great. But what about the "ick" factor? It WAS someone else's bag.... Not to worry. I sanitize each and every piece, inside and out, with a hand-held UV-C light technology wand. That being said, no warranty or guarantee of any kind of implied or offered on any Dressed Up Cat product..
I started designing and creating these bags in 2005 for my own amusement. Once I started wearing them out, the inquiries came. Within three months I sold my first piece. I then started thinking about my delightful hobby differently: the prospect of sharing the fun was positively delicious! I have spent my entire career in business, mostly in
analytical and quantitative roles, so venturing over into my right brain has been truly delightful--maybe I should have been here from the start!
Green, Green, Green!
Are you worried about what environmental future we are leaving generations to come? So am I. We don’t know just how much energy is spent--the "carbon footprint"-- to design, manufacture, ship, display and sell a new leather handbag. I am sure, however, that the carbon footprint to "create" a Dressed Up Cat Handbag--made of recycled, locally sourced components—is smaller. And most Dressed Up Cat Bags are sold online, not in a retail store requiring lighting, a commuting salesperson, and climate control. My packing materials are also recycled. Now we're down to the energy expended in delivering your bag to you......
It's a start.
